Chroma Key (Green/Blue Screen) Filming
Chroma Key or Green/Blue screen filming is a technique by which you can superimpose a video onto any background. It involves videoing a character against a green or blue screen background and then removing the colour in a video editing application and replacing it with another video. Essentially, the colour green and blue are not commonly found in skin tones and therefore can be removed easily (although the clothes should also not be green or blue). The technology is now relatively easy to use and therefore is a possible medium for use in schools.

Key UsesChroma Key technology is used widely in the TV industry for news room reporters and interviewees to create a more dynamic and interactive presentation. It is also used creatively in the film industry as a special effect to superimpose characters against computer generated backgrounds.
Chroma key techniques could be used in schools in the following ways:
Practical ExamplesA School in Sweden:A couple of Swedish teachers discuss how they use Chroma Key technology in their school.
Math Movie NetworkMr Avery, a teacher from Massachusetts, who has used Chroma Key technology _with his pupils to run a Math Movie Network. He has an interesting blog, which can be found by clicking here.
Nonfiction TrailIn the following example, these group of teachers have used the genre of the Wild West as a background to discussing nonfictional literature.
The History TeachersIn the video below, the 'History Teachers' have used Chroma Key technology to illustrate their backgrounds to their music videos, which are pastiches of classic pop songs but with an educational message!
